  • Jamie Lynn Spears and her older sister, Britney Spears, have a strained relationship.
  • Over the years, Jamie Lynn defended her sister against critics.
  • Jamie Lynn recently spoke about Britney on the TV show “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!”

Jamie Lynn Spears has made a name for herself as an actor in Hollywood, but to most people, she’s recognized as the younger sibling of pop superstar Britney Spears.

Over the years, the former Nickelodeon star has spoken fondly of her older sister. But as their relationship has become more strained and hostile at times, Jamie Lynn has been less willing to speak publicly about their dynamic.

Here’s everything Jamie Lynn has said about Britney.

Jamie Lynn revealed Britney’s lasting advice on dealing with public scrutiny

In June 2016, Jamie Lynn told People Now that she and Britney had many conversations about coping with fame.

“But I think the main thing is really just to try yourself and keep that as your core value and keep your family close,” she said. “The people around you are really important to who you are. And I think that’s kind of the biggest thing I’ve taken away from just being around all of the chaos in general.”

When asked to share her perspective on witnessing some of Britney’s low moments, Jamie Lynn said: “We just are very honest and our emotions are on our sleeves and I think sometimes that played out in the public eye. But the reason that I think it’s so forgiven and people do love her is because you do see that it was genuine.”

“To me, at the time, doing pop music was a much more far-fetched dream,” Jamie Lynn said. “We were from this little town in the middle of nowhere and she says, ‘Hey, I want to go do what Madonna does. I want to go do this.'”

“It would have made much more sense from our small town of Louisiana for Britney to do country,” she added.

Jamie Lynn also said that she didn’t envision her sister doing a full-on country album.

“What she is is more than just music,” she said. “She’s created a real legacy. She will experiment with everything, and I hope she does, but I think that she’s got her niche. She knows what she’s doing.”

In 2016, Jamie Lynn praised her ‘badass’ sister

Around that time, Britney performed a medley of her hits at the Billboard Music Awards, where she also received the Icon Award, and was in the middle of what would become a four-year Las Vegas residency.

“My sister is in a badass place right now,” Jamie Lynn told People.

“We need to focus on what an amazing place everyone is in, especially her,” she added. “She’s kicking ass right now!”

Jamie Lynn said she hoped her 2 daughters would have a relationship similar to the one she has with Britney

“Me and my sister are 10 years apart, and Maddie and Ivey are 10 years apart, so I’m hoping they have the same kind of relationship where it was like a second mom, almost,” Jamie Lynn told People in May 2018. “It’s gonna be a special relationship. Sisters are something special — especially when there’s that age gap there.”

Months later, Jamie Lynn posted a video on Instagram, showing Ivey attending her first-ever Britney show.

In April 2019, Jamie Lynn shared a scathing message for critics and warned them not to come for her or her loved ones

Amid the growing #FreeBritney movement and increased concerns over Britney’s health and safety, Jamie Lynn posted an old video of her and her sister being swarmed by paparazzi on a street, with one person heckling the pop star.

“10 years ago, who was there?? I have been here long before anyone else and I’ll be here long after,” Jamie Lynn wrote on X (formally known as Twitter). “I love my sister with everything I have. So anyone or anything that speaks to the contrary can GTFOH with all the comments about what you don’t understand.”

“Don’t come for me or the ones I love anymore,” she said in a follow-up post.

“Britney was always really open and honest with me about the good and the bad that comes with this industry,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published in May 2020. “And that’s what gave me the confidence to say no sometimes.”

Jamie Lynn said that Britney’s guidance impacted her career choices in a positive way.

“She walked through the fire and then shared all the secrets with me. Without Britney, I probably would’ve made a lot of different decisions,” the “Zoey 101″ star said. ” I probably wouldn’t have valued my personal time, wanting to just be a kid, and I might have said yes to projects I didn’t actually want to do.”

Similar to her previous comments about the advice that she got from Britney, Jamie Lynn told THR that Britney taught her to prioritize her family and inner circle.

Jamie Lynn called Britney a ‘strong, badass, unstoppable woman’

In a July 2020 Instagram post that has since been deleted, Jamie Lynn shared screenshots from celebrities including Halsey and Maren Morris regarding mental health.

“If you deal with mental illness or care for someone dealing with mental illness, then you know how important it is to respect the situation with privacy for the person, and the family trying to protect their loved ones, no matter how it may appear to the public, and as the public we must learn to do the same,” Spears captioned her post, per E! News. “I pray this doesn’t bring shame to anyone dealing with mental illness, you are not alone, and you are loved.”

In response to an Instagram user who called out Jamie Lynn for not speaking out regarding Britney’s mental health, the actor reportedly said: “You have no right to assume anything about my sister, and I have NO right to speak about HER health and personal matters. She is a strong, badass, unstoppable woman, and that’s the only thing that is OBVIOUS.”

Jamie Lynn commented on how Britney was doing amid the legal battle surrounding her conservatorship

“I think that she’s doing just like the rest of us,” Jamie Lynn said while participating in a virtual interview with “Good Morning America” in October 2020.

“She’s trying to make the best and stay positive during a very challenging time and challenging year, and I think that that’s kind of the theme of everyone right now,” she added.

Jamie Lynn said that Britney was her ‘biggest cheerleader’

In an interview with The Guardian, published in November 2020, Jamie Lynn vividly recalled witnessing the effect of Britney’s level of fame while in a car that was surrounded by fans.

“Something clicked in my head on that car ride,” she said, “Like, my sister is famous: Mariah Carey famous. She’d created so much power for herself. At that moment I knew I wanted it, too.”

“I always looked at her with pride, and she was my biggest cheerleader guiding me in an honest way,” Jamie Lynn added.

Jamie Lynn spoke out following the release of the New York Times documentary titled ‘Framing Britney Spears’

“Dear media, try not to repeat the mistakes of your past. Look where that got us. Do better,” she wrote on her Instagram story in February 2021.

In another Instagram story, Jamie Lynn also denied attending a virtual #FreeBritney rally — but reiterated that she supports Britney.

“A few media outlets ran a false story about me attending a virtual rally yesterday,” she wrote. “In fact, someone represented themselves as me without my knowledge. I love my sister very much, but I was not aware of the rally, nor was I in attendance for the virtual rally.”

In June 2021, Jamie Lynn finally weighed in on the #FreeBritney movement after being criticized for not publicly voicing her support

“Since the day I was born, I’ve only loved, adored, and supported my sister,” she said in a video posted on her Instagram story. “I mean, this is my freaking big sister, before any of this bullshit.”

“This situation does not affect me either way, because I’m only her sister who’s only concerned about her happiness,” she added.

Jamie Lynn also said that she hasn’t financially piggybacked off her sister’s success.

“I paid my freakin bills since I was 10 years old,” she said. “Not that I owe the public anything, because my sister knows I love and support her.”

“Maybe I didn’t support the way the public would like me to with a hashtag on a public platform but I can assure you that I support my sister long before there was a hashtag and I’ll support her long after,” Jamie Lynn added.

Jamie Lynn said that Britney sent gifts to her daughters

The “Sweet Magnolias” star posted a photo of a box of toys on her Instagram story in July 2021 and wrote, “nothing sweeter than coming home to a box full of goodies for my girls from their auntie,” Entertainment Tonight reported.

Jamie Lynn also tagged Britney’s official Instagram account in the post, implying the presents came from the pop star.

In January 2022, Jamie Lynn spoke about her relationship with Britney and reacted to the end of her conservatorship

In an interview that aired on “Good Morning America,'” Jamie Lynn told ABC News’ Juju Chang that she was “happy” when Britney’s conservatorship was terminated in November 2021 after 13 years.

Jamie Lynn said that she was 17 years old when it was established and didn’t fully understand the situation.

“I took no steps to be a part of it,” she said.

“I’ve always been my sister’s biggest supporter,” she said. “So when she needed help, I set up ways to do so. Went out of my way to make sure that she had the contacts she needed to possibly go ahead and end this conservatorship and just end this all for our family. If it’s going to cause this much discord, why continue it?”

Jamie Lynn also said that she was confused by their public feud.

“That love is still there. 100%. I love my sister,” she said. “I’ve only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her, and she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.”

In interviews as well as her memoir, the star also alleged that Britney took a knife from the kitchen and locked her and Jamie Lynn inside a room after becoming “scared.”

Jamie Lynn said she was young at the time and didn’t know what caused that response from Britney, but the incident happened sometime after Britney wed Jason Alexander in Las Vegas.

Days before the release of her memoir, Jamie Lynn posted a statement regarding the ‘exhausting’ nature of Britney’s public comments and accusations

“Brit, I am always here, you know behind the scenes I have always been here,” Jamie Lynn wrote. “It’s become exhausting when conversations, and texts we have in private don’t match what you post on social media. I know you’re going through a lot and I never want to diminish that, but I also can’t diminish myself.”

Jamie Lynn said that she chose to speak out in order to protect her and her family, who had been receiving death threats. She also said that her memoir isn’t about Britney.

“I can’t help that I was born a Spears too, and that some of my experiences involve my sister,” she wrote. “I’ve worked hard since before I was even a teenager, and I’ve built my career in spite of just being someone’s little sister.”

During her emotional appearance on Alex Cooper’s podcast titled “Call Her Daddy,” released in early 2022, Jamie Lynn said that it’s still challenging to work through her past experiences in real-time during interviews.

Jamie Lynn, the youngest of three children, said that she always felt like an “afterthought” and never had her own voice. As Britney became famous, Jamie Lynn said that she tried to stay out of the way and avoid saying anything that would portray her sister in a negative light.

The actor also voiced her frustration about being pitted against Britney and not having her own identity.

“Why can’t two sisters exist in their own right? We never compared each other, the world did,” she said. “We never had that dynamic or that issue. My sister to this day is going to always, to me, be the most badass performer that ever walked on this Earth and nothing’s gonna change that.”

“My whole life I kind of felt like I didn’t matter,” Jamie Lynn said, crying.

Her book included various bombshells about her family and upbringing. Jamie Lynn, who’s 10 years younger than Britney, said that her sister was “like a second mother” when she was born.

“The sisterly bond I share with Britney was fostered by her devotion to me as a child,” Jamie Lynn wrote.

“Being the baby sister of Britney Spears is nothing like what people assume,” she continued. “From the day I arrived, I became Britney’s. Momma was often working and taking care of the family. She was also dealing with the complexities of an addict husband.”

Jamie Lynn said that Britney “spent hours” taking care of her and dressing her up like a doll.

“She doted on me as an infant and continued to do so as I began to sing and create my own skits,” she said. “My sister showered me with attention, love, and praise well into my teens.”

Jamie Lynn refrained from going into too much detail about the status of her dynamic with Britney in an interview with Variety

“I have nothing but absolute love for every single one of my family members,” she said in an interview published in July 2023. “If I learned anything from last year, being so open and feeling like I had to defend myself at times, I don’t feel like there’s anything else that I need to say.”

“I just have to leave it where it is because those conversations are meant to be personal,” she continued. “All I can focus on now is my girls, my husband, and the work that I’m doing.”

While competing on season 23 of the British reality TV show ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!,’ Jamie Lynn said that she loves Britney

During one episode, Jamie Lynn was asked if she remembered when Britney famously kissed Madonna at the 2003 MTV VMAs.

“I was at home watching like, ‘Oh OK, this will be fun tomorrow at school, can’t wait,'” she said. “I was just a normal kid.”

Jamie Lynn also said that she grew up idolizing and defending her sister.

“Anything my sister did I always thought was the best,” she said. “When it came to my sister, even if I felt anything, if anyone said anything I was ready to go. I was like, ‘Don’t talk about my sister, she’s the best.'”

When a contestant asked Jamie Lynn if it was true that she and Britney don’t get along now, the actor replied: “Yeah, I love my sister.”

During another conversation, Jamie Lynn said that Brtiney would probably be worried about her if she were tuning into the show.

“I think she’s probably checking in on me heavily,” Jamie Lynn said. “I do think she’s probably like, ‘Why would she do that?’ She asked me that before I came here, she was like, ‘You’re really going to do it?'”

“She’s a good big sister. I love her,” Jamie Lynn added. “Me and her throw down. The world’s seen that. I’ve learned to stop talking about it publicly, but you know what, family’s fight. Listen, we just do it better than most.”

The star also explained that they had a “very complicated upbringing” and sometimes took out their frustrations on each other.

“I’ve been the one person in her life — and she can say this — I’ve never taken anything from her, you know? I’ve been the one person in her life who’s always said, ‘I just want to be your sister,” Jamie Lynn said. “We just had a really weird life so we can’t explain it to many people, but at the end of the road I know that that’s my family. I love them.”
