Hunting an owl to save an ecosystem

Spread the news

Biologist Daniel Hofstadter and a tiny band of researchers have been carrying out the most expansive barred owl removal effort to date . It’s a project that has killed more than 1,000 owls in Northern California since 2019 across nearly 10 million acres. The biologists believe that their work protecting spotted owls — a species that launched a conservation movement more than three decades ago — will ultimately help safeguard the ecosystem in one of the last old growth forests in the West. Host Martine Powers speaks with national climate reporter Joshua Partlow about the motivation behind the barred owl removal, the brief history of spotted owls in the area, and the ornithologist who carries out the shootings. Today’s show was produced by Bishop Sand. It was edited by Monica Campbell and mixed by Justin Garrish. Subscribe to The Washington Post here .

Ukraine tests advanced drone command post for enhanced operational control

Spread the news

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, together with a Ukrainian manufacturer, has begun testing a command post for drone-equipped units. It is designed to operate both in stationary conditions and during movement, according to the Ministry of Defense.

It is noted that among the requirements set by the Ministry of Defense for the command post are maximum autonomy, modern communication, and electronic warfare (EW) systems.

The new model of equipment should provide control of unmanned systems units in all weather conditions, both in stationary conditions and during movement.

The command cabin will be equipped with automated workstations and an interactive panel. Commanders will have the ability to quickly analyze the situation and make decisions swiftly while managing drone units, enhancing their operational effectiveness.

A specialized, highly mobile transport vehicle will serve as the base for this innovative development. An all-wheel drive vehicle must solve the problem of sufficient maneuverability and movement of the command post in off-road conditions.

First Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Ivan Havryliuk, noted that drone units have significantly expanded and require specialized combat control tools.

“The domestic weapons manufacturers proposed a technical solution to this request. The new model of equipment will undergo testing and be evaluated by commanders of combat units. If the development meets the requirements, it will be codified and enter mass production. We must maintain technological superiority over the enemy,” he added.

Earlier we reported that the domestic drone aviation complex Shchedryk was officially approved for delivery to the units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

Recently, tests of drones with fiber-optic communication systems were also completed in Ukraine.

Expert identifies two key targets of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy system

Spread the news

Russia understands that it will not be able to completely disable Ukraine’s energy system. Therefore, it is attempting to disrupt the electricity supply in eastern Ukraine, stated Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy and Infrastructure Programs at the Razumkov Center, in a comment to RBC-Ukraine’s YouTube channel.

He noted that the latest massive strike targeted the Dnipro and Kharkiv energy hubs.

“The goal is clear – they want to plunge eastern Ukraine into darkness, and on the other hand, disconnect the eastern energy system from the western one, disrupting the integrity of the energy system. The enemy understands that it cannot completely disable the entire energy system,” Omelchenko explained.

According to him, the Russians recognize that the main generation of electricity in Ukraine is located on the right bank. Therefore, they are focusing their efforts on plunging the east into darkness.

Massive attack on December 25

On the night of December 25, Russian forces launched almost 80 missiles at Ukraine. Ukrainian defenders managed to shoot down 59 missiles.

As usual, the attack was aimed at energy facilities. After the attack, blackout schedules were introduced in Ukraine.

However, as several sources in the energy sector told RBC-Ukraine, the situation with power supply began to improve yesterday afternoon.
