Ukraine has received liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States for the first time. The delivery was facilitated via Greece, according to the Telegram channel of Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President.
“This is not just a shipment — it’s a strategic step,” Andriy Yermak stated.
According to Yermak, this achievement came despite Russia’s attempts to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the war.
“We have scored another victory on the energy front,” he emphasized.
Details about gas delivery from the US to Ukraine via Greece
On December 27, DTEK received the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States after the LNG vessel docked in Greece.
The shipment, approximately 100 million cubic meters of gas or 1 TWh of energy onboard the Gaslog Savannah, arrived at the Revithoussa LNG terminal on Friday morning. D.TRADING, DTEK’s European trading subsidiary, purchased the entire cargo.
Working with Greek and other partners, the LNG will be regasified and transported through the European Union and Ukrainian gas networks.
According to DTEK, this delivery is part of broader efforts to enhance energy security in Ukraine and Europe by reducing dependence on Russian gas.
D.TRADING expects Friday’s shipment to be the first of many such deliveries from the US and aims to expand its LNG operations to Northern Europe and the Baltic region.
The cargo is routed through Greece due to war-related restrictions on LNG transit via the Black Sea and direct access to Ukraine. Instead, the company will utilize regasification terminals like Revithoussa, along with cross-border pipelines such as the “Vertical Corridor” initiative, which facilitates gas transport between Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
As previously reported, Qatar has threatened to halt LNG supplies to Europe if QatarEnergy faces penalties under the EU’s corporate sustainability due diligence directive.
